Before being familiar with Adobe design softwares such as Photoshop and Illustrator, I used to use Microsoft word to draw something. I know it's not as powerful as Illustrator, of course, because it isn't aimed to be a vector drawing software. But if don't have Adobe software or other vector drawing software, you might want to try Microsoft Word, since this software normally available in almost everywhere. It happened to me once, when I was in Graphic Design 1 class. We were asked to design a logo. But the logo must be created either using a vector drawing (Illustrator) or hand drawn. No Photoshop allowed, since it's not an appropriate program to design a logo. You know, because it's pixel based, not vector, so that your logo will be pixelated if you scale it.
I didn't have any skill in Illustrator at the time, and my hand drawing suck. I mean, really suck. I never happy with my hand drawn. I couldn't even make a single straight line with confident. Normally my straight line will be contain of at least two lines combined together.
So, since we were asked to draw in vector based, I decided to use Microsoft Word. Using the feature showed in red rectangle in the picture above, I ended up like this:
Yeah... pretty cool. I mean, it's not that great, but for using word processor software, I think this is not bad at all.
I remember my teacher reaction when I said I use Microsoft Word to draw this. She was amazed. She literary laughed her a** off. Then she let everybody in the class know that, and everybody laughed too. Surprised and ... I don't know what they really feel. But they seemed like they couldn't believe that I did the logo in Microsoft Word. Because of that moment, my teacher always remember me after that. She then really recommended me to take Illustrator class the next quarter. I did.
Anyway, back to the Microsoft Word capability in drawing vector, there are some tools that almost similar to the one in Illustrator. You can drawn basic shape using the pre-created symbols and modify it by manipulating the anchor points, just like in Illustrator. You are able to draw using pen tool which is exactly similar to the way pen tool work in Illustrator. For free hand drawing, there is free hand tool that work similar to pencil tool in Illustrator. You can modify stroke and fill color too, but, you don't have brush tool in Word.
One other thing to notice: there is no way to convert the result into JPEG. But I tricked it by saving the document as PDF and then imported it into Photoshop and save it as JPEG. Tadaaa....! My logo done.
Here is another thing that I draw using MS Word:
The cat actually mounted in mat board, but I did draw it in MS word. This picture is the scanned artwork, I couldn't find the MSWord version of it. It's gone with my lost flask disk.
