Levi's Indonesia campaign stuffs for Social Media Festival 2011

Though my new job is a Channel Activation Executive which is not directly related to design job, sometimes our team needs a fast design job that need to be done very quick. It's almost impossible to ask the Creative Department to finish all our jobs in a short time -- that might be needed to be revised several times upon client's request. The Creative Department handles all other requests for every campaign our company doing.
For that reason, my design skill really help.
One of our client is Levi's Indonesia. Currently we are working for Levi's brand activation at Social Media Festival 2011 that will held in FX Mall from 22 - 24 Sept 2011. We will be doing some quizzes and having Levi's booth there. We need some creative stuffs for this campaign, and I am responsible to create all the stuffs, beside of other activation jobs.
here are some design i made. It's all draft that we propose to client and will be modified along with client's input.

The Biggest Looser New Design

Here is the new design I made for "The Biggest Looser" poster for my friend, Jill. I still like the dual tone black and yellow theme. It seem really simple and has vintage sense for me. I like the type face too, it makes the vintage feel more. I do still want to tweak some elements, especially the logos position and size.
If you guys could suggest any idea, I appreciate every comment.

New poster project for Athletic Life

My friend, Jill, want me to design a poster about "Biggest Looser" competition she is holding with her friend in Federal Way for their gym. As I heard about the title, the first thing came out to my mind must be "the Biggest Looser" the tv reality show. But then I decided to stay away from their  style (including their logo with shrinking font with measuring tape). So, I came out with this two poster draft

But then her friend want me to change the muscular man picture, because he doesn't think his client want to get that muscular. He also wanted me to put red color on some text. So, I made this design. But then Jill suggest me some pictures she like, then this design will change again soon. I will be back with the update once it's done

Creativity Gone Wild: from Poster Competition to Illustration

The First Version (with text)
The Final Version
If you notice there is a little weird looking worm on top right of this page along with "Creativity gone wild" text, it comes from this complete artwork. It was a poster design for Highline Community College Portfolio Show event. All the students in the class were required to submit their design, and there would be a winner base on the voting by all Visual Communication Department students and staffs.

I didn't win, 4th place only. Not bad. But since I personally like my design, I didn't stop modifying the poster, until it come out like current version.

The final version image has a deviantART watermark on it. You can check my other design on my DevianART Channel here: http://manthono.deviantart.com/

The Sad Cat: Illustration Design

This cat has a very long story. Begin with the day when my teacher in Graphic design I asked the class to make an illustration of any animal in a shape of either circle, square or triangle. The animal can be anything, but the shape has to be in the form the three basic shapes.

I am a cat people. I like cat and I also have a personal story about cat. When I was a kid -- around 3-4 of age -- I  had a very nice white cat. This cat was so smart and good. He follows me everywhere I go, into the forest -- near the village where I was born. Funny, because normally people bring dog into the wood. But my mother allowed no dog in our house. I like my cat anyway, because he was able to catch bird and brought it alive to me so I can roast it at home. This cat died hit by car. it was so sad.

I also have a dark story about cat. When I was in around 9 or 10, I killed a cat. I didn't mean to, but this cat ate three little bird that I was planning to pet, taken from the wood. The cat ate the birds when I was busy building the cage. I hit the cat with a stick very hard. It wasn't died right away. It ran with hobble. Three days later I found it's dead body not far from my house.

I felt so guilty. Killing a cat is a kind of taboo in our culture. Cat is the prophet's pet, that's what my mom said. I grew up with the guilt. It makes me always threat cat nicely after that, trying to live down my sin. Until I grown up cat become my favorite animal.

So, when my teacher ask me to make a picture of animal in a shape, of course what first came to my mind was cat.
I try not to draw the cat literally, because my drawing suck. I make it a little bit abstract look. It turned up pretty good. I liked it. My teacher did too.
The first version of this image was a black and white image mounted on mat board. I scanned it up and brought to Illustrator, convert it to vector and add some painting look. It ended up like this.

Living American Dream: burger and Starbucks

You know there is a funny thing when you ask Indonesian guy "have you eaten?"
They will always say "not yet" if they didn't eat rice. No matter how much other food that they have eaten. They will always say "I haven't eaten yet" even if they already had 5 sandwiches plus salad plus pasta or whatever, because for them "eat" mean "eating rice".
I used to be like that. Before coming here, I couldn't imagine how i would survive without rice. How people still alive without eating rice. At the very first months I used to have rice everyday. Day by day it changes. Until recently, I get used to not have rice in my meal. Today, I can't remember when was the last time I eat rice.
Now I can eat anything for my meal, while keep wondering how can I still survive :-)

Drawing with Microsoft Word?

Before being familiar with Adobe design softwares such as Photoshop and Illustrator, I used to use Microsoft word to draw something. I know it's not as powerful as Illustrator, of course, because it isn't aimed to be a vector drawing software. But if don't have Adobe software or other vector drawing software, you might want to try Microsoft Word, since this software normally available in almost everywhere.

It happened to me once, when I was in Graphic Design 1 class. We were asked to design a logo. But the logo must be created either using a vector drawing (Illustrator) or hand drawn. No Photoshop allowed, since it's not an appropriate program to design a logo. You know, because it's pixel based, not vector, so that your logo will be pixelated if you scale it.
I didn't have any skill in Illustrator at the time, and my hand drawing suck. I mean, really suck. I never happy with my hand drawn. I couldn't even make a single straight line with confident. Normally my straight line will be contain of at least two lines combined together.

So, since we were asked to draw in vector based, I decided to use Microsoft Word. Using the feature showed in red rectangle in the picture above, I ended up like this:
